Neil Bruce - BearoticArt
TTB: How did you get started?
I got started in part, by growing up across the street from one of DC comics leading artists: Irv Novick. He taught me so much about the drawing the figure and perspective. My earliest Bearotic Art came about initially an outlet for what I wasn't fully dealing with in my personal relations. In other words: I was in denial for many years living the "straight life" and woefully unhappy. Doing my own art helped free me up and confront my suppressed desires.
TTB: When did you identify with bears?
My most intense early attractions were often big burly guys and this surprised me as much as confused me. But with the advent of magazines like "Bear" and "Grizzly" I soon realized I was far from alone. Then in mid 90's with the Internet; I discovered Bears were actually world wide community. I started up the first of my Yahoo groups in 2000 with the idea of sharing my work with other "Bear enthusiasts" and to get feedback on the work itself.
TTB: What inspires your work?
Obviously Big Hairy Guys; but I am also inspired by many other artists. The work of Rodin, Sargent and Caravaggio are among my biggest influences. I am also huge fan of Japanese born artist Minoru.
TTB: Did you have a nickname in high school?
Jolly Green
TTB: Who/what is your favorite subject?
It varies from day to day; but the wider the neck, the bigger the shoulders will always get my attention.
Do you have a favorite piece?
Of my own; (I know it's a hokey answer) The one I'm just about to begin. Of some body's else's....Michelangelo's David is pretty close to perfection for me..
TTB: If you could have a drink with any artist (living or dead) who would it be?

Leonardo Da Vinci no contest.
TTB: Is there a Mr. Bruce?
Indeed there is : Gorden, he has been my partner for
nearly 13 years now. He is an Executive Chef and a sweet as some of his desserts.
TTB: What's coming up for you?
I am hoping to take part in the Tom of Finland Erotic Art weekend in L.A. in the Spring, as well as possibly Beartrek, and Leatherfest here in NYC. I am also shopping around for a book deal...
TTB: Where can we learn more?
These are good places to start:
